Today we watched a video listing the 20 countries plus Puerto Rico where Spanish was spoken and then we were to list which countries we wanted to visit. At the moment I don't have any plans to travel abroad, at least not until the pandemic settles. However, as my coach reminded me, there are ways to visit virtually.

She's mentioned it before and I never got around to checking it out, so this time I went ahead and signed up and booked a tour to Cartagena this Saturday morning. Exciting! If I'm lucky, some or all of it will be in Spanish!
Totumo Mud Volcano
About the tour
Would you like to swim inside a volcano? Experience something unique during your holiday in Cartagena, Colombia. Let’s discover together, one of the world's smallest volcanos and enjoy a relaxing soak; the trip to Santa Catalina town lasts around 50 minutes driving from Cartagena. Upon arrival at the volcanic zone, prepare for a unique experience as you climb the 50 steps that surround the volcano; people say afterward, you will appear to be 10 years younger.

Let me know if any of the tour is in Spanish. Am really thinking about an immersive experience. Also thinking about whether speaking and writing is helping or hindering at this stage! Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI spent a year solely doing Duolingo before I joined my first event and started to speak. To Nigel's Telegram point, it WAS scary the first time, but I'm over that now. I believe in the immersive experience so I think I'm going to focus my time watching, listening and reading.
DeleteFrom the start, Ismar has told us not to worry about speaking or writing in Spanish, though he does have us repeating phrases.
As for whether or not speaking and writing will hinder? I guess that depends on your goals, like Nigel said. Pablo's blog said no speaking until you reach an intermediate stage or you'll learn the language with an accent. But I feel like I've already developed an accent, so at this point what does it matter? I've decided not to avoid speaking or writing, but put more emphasis on everything else.
I spent a few years on Duolingo but only attended my first event about 2-3 months ago. I feel like I have learned more in the last month than I did in those years, but then, maybe I needed the exposure and was just soaking it all up. I want to be able to do all ,and at the moment, the accent is not a priority.
DeleteThese tours are live and you can send them questions, as you tour around….I have done several tours in Peru, Machu Picchu, the floating islands, etc.
ReplyDeleteSome of the tours are in Spanish, but not many. You can search the tours and click on “other languages” to find out,…there is one coming up that is a mix of Spanish and English
Thanks Joyce, will look into it.
